ITC Provide Sound Systems for UK Triathlon Event (September 2002)

ITC Provided two 5kw sound systems, relaying sound over large areas at the Start and Finishes venues for the Half Ironman UK Triathlon in Llanberis.

The 2nd annual UK Half Ironman Triathlon finished a huge success in September, it is the only race in the UK and Ireland in which winners could qualify for the Ironman Triathlon World Championships in Hawaii in October 2003.

Great Britain’s Annie Emmerson, in the women, and Richard Jones, in the men, finishished unexpectedly first in the highly competitive field of 1200 competitors from 26 countries.

Rainy weather made conditions difficulty for both the competitors and sound crew. Commentary and background music to motivate competitors was relayed throughout large areas. Commentators used radio mics for extra flexibility to relay important information to competitors, race stewards and to the many spectators.

After starting to rig the sound system at 2:00am in the dark, cold and poring rain, the first system was ready for the 5:00am start. Once set up the crew enjoyed playing their part in staging and enjoying watching the event!

Richard Jones, who also recently won the UK’s Home Nations Triathlon, seized the opportunity and stormed through the field, catching up valuable places. Jones commented: “ After the worst swim of my life, I felt good on the run and the whole field came to me.” Jones added that this was an “excellently organised race and would be of great benefit to sport in Wales, the British Triathlon Association and triathlon as sport in general.”
